The Premier League rules set out that any appeal hearing must take place within 12 weeks of an appeal being lodged, with a decision due no later than 30 days after the hearing’s conclusion. However, this has been a long-running case with a huge volume of evidence (the index alone for the bundle of case documents runs to 750 pages), so it is unclear if further time would be allowed. The Athletic has asked the league if this would be the case. If Manchester City bring further challenges against the verdicts and/or any sanctions imposed, and exhaust all avenues of appeal available to them, legal experts believe any conclusion to the case could take years. Fred Snowball, partner at Macfarlanes law firm, said: “The Premier League’s rules provide for an appeal process, and then potentially an additional arbitration. Beyond that, the possibility of a court challenge cannot be ruled out. A final resolution to the disciplinary process — let alone any follow-on claims — could still be years away.” 🔗
